Our (German Program) event is titled “Land of Ideas.” The German government used this slogan in 2006 to promote the country, often in combination with advertising study abroad opportunities. We would like to adapt this campaign by hosting an event that exhibits our students work on German culture and language. For instance, we have one group of students who created posters on the German polymath Alexander von Humboldt. We are asking our students taking classes in English on German culture to rewrite a famous poem about the First World War considering new technology such as drones. We would also like to feature some projects from our summer study abroad program (and others produced in our program). We would like to print “exhibit tickets” in German (we hope to get permission from the Papermaking Museum for an image of one of their German artefacts) so that students have a keepsake and we would also like to distribute them near Tech Green to advertise the event prior to it taken place. We would also like to serve “Studentenfutter” (the direct translation is “food for students,” which is simply a trailmix to have energy to think (more here: https://www.thelocal.de/20240118/german-word-of-the-day-studentenfutter). We would also like to ask all participants of the event to write down their idea for shaping the future, as there is currently a debate in Germany (and the US and other countries) how we can confront the many crises of our times. We hope this event will shine a light on Germany, study abroad, our program but especially the wonderful ideas that our students have through their engagement with another culture.
