Event panelists and moderator:
1. Dr. Benjamin Matthews is a Senior Lecturer in Design in the School of Creative Industries at the University of Newcastle, New South Wales, Australia, and Founder of the Wild Yeast Zoo, a biotech startup harnessing the enormous potential in wild yeast for biomanufacturing. His scholarly approach is transdisciplinary, and includes engagement with: design; organized networks; creative teams; innovation; media work; celebrity; collaborative cultures; urban/street cultures; visual culture; emergence; translatability; mimetic theory; and media anthropology.
2. Dr. Andrea Jonsson is an Associate Professor of French and Francophone Studies and the Director of the Voice+ Research Lab in the School of Modern Languages at Georgia Tech. Her research traces connections between voice, gender, and affect in contemporary culture, literature, music, and media. The rest of her research is more firmly set in Women’s, Gender, and Affect studies. She also co-leads the Serve-Learn-Sustain (SLS) Study Abroad program at Georgia Tech Europe and the Language, Environment, and Arts in France (LEAF) summer study abroad program. Launched in 2025, this 9-credit, 8-week immersive study abroad experience in Nice, Cannes, and other culturally rich cities, focuses on advanced coursework in environmental humanities, arts, and sustainability.
The event will be moderated by Dr. Lionel Gall, a Senior Lecturer in French in the School of Modern Languages at Georgia Tech and a Sustainability/SDG (Sustainable Development Goals) Education Teaching Fellow under the aegis of Georgia Tech Serve-Learn-Sustain Program and the Institute's Center for Teaching & Learning. He is also the Director of the Language for Business and Technology (LBAT) France program. This 9-credit, 8-week faculty-led summer study abroad program in Paris, France, that focuses on sustainability and business topics such as startup entrepreneurship, creative and luxury industries, professional and career development portfolio making, business negotiation and job interviewing protocols and etiquette.
Learn about the Serve-Learn-Sustain (SLS)- France immersion program. Serve-Learn-Sustain (SLS)- France is an interdisciplinary program at the Georgia Tech-Europe instructional site in Metz, France, that takes place during the fall semester and combines academic study with meaningful volunteer work in partnership with local organizations focused on environmental, social, and urban sustainability, all conducted in French. This 12-credit semester program allows students to study the French language in conjunction with various other fields like media studies, sustainability, and engineering.
