Did you know that, on average, $250,000 is awarded every year to GT students studying abroad? IP students are strongly encouraged to apply for one of the many study abroad scholarships administered by OIE to help finance the IP overseas requirement. In particular, IP students who have financial need and who are going on an exchange program have a good chance of receiving some sort of scholarship assistance.
In addition to these scholarships, a special IP Scholarship is available to help off-set the cost of travel associated with the second IP term abroad. Students awarded the IP Scholarship will receive up to $1000 (pending approval from financial aid), and it will be disbursed at the start of the term for which they receive the award. Global Internship Program students are eligible provided they register with GIP and are using the internship as part of their 26 weeks abroad for the International Plan.
In order to be considered for an IP Scholarship, the following criteria must be met:
Student must be an undergraduate student participating in the International Plan
The term abroad will be the student's second IP international experience (or second semester of an Academic Year program)
The international experience must be approved to count for the IP
Student must be in good academic standing with the Institute and with the International Plan (at least a 2.7 cumulative GPA)
Student must complete the OIE scholarship application for the term they will be going abroad (deadlines are in January, April, and October each year - plan ahead!)
**Please note that students cannot be awarded both an OIE study abroad scholarship and an IP Scholarship for the same term abroad, so students are encouraged to apply each term they are abroad to maximize opportunity for funds.**
In order to receive the funds, students must sign and complete the appropriate paperwork. The International Plan Advisor will notify you of all required documentation to be completed. Additionally, students who receive an IP Scholarship will be asked to complete a reflective photo essay upon their return from their second term abroad. More details regarding this requirement will be sent with the award letter. IP Scholarship funds are not guaranteed and are available based on funding.
- Additional scholarships exist to help fund your time abroad. Be sure to check out this extensive list from the study abroad team as well as resources through your department, such as the Mundy Funds from CEE or language scholarships from Modern Languages.
- Choosing an affordable program before scholarships is also an important way to save money on studying abroad. Be sure to compare costs between programs - over half of our programs cost the same or less than a semester at Georgia Tech!
- Finally, keep in mind that most financial aid you currently receive, including Hope and Zell Miller, can be used for your study abroad term. You can also consider Global Internships, several of which are paid.
- If you are concerned about financing your time abroad, you are encouraged to attend one of the "How to Afford Study Abroad" workshops held throughout the semester and/or contact the Scholarships advisor at firstname.lastname@example.org.
